Vancouver’s menswear shops, from a visitors perspective:

Before I tell you a little bit about a few of the shops I checked out while in Vancouver, let me just say that if you ever get the chance to visit Vancouver and the surrounding area, do it. Vancouver is incredibly beautiful. It’s amazing how much of the city is waterfront, and the architecture is dominated by beautiful reflective glass. These were the best of the shops that I visited, they are not necessarily stocked solely with products I would buy, but they are fantastic shops nonetheless.

Haven - This is a killer little shop for the streetwear/tech goth ninja hybrid. It’s located in a sort of back alley, behind Roden Gray and near Neighbour, and the layout of the shop is great, two small stories of tech/street jawnz. On the shelves and racks you can find pieces by all of the CDG lines, Deluxe, Headporter (and Plus), Undercover, Wings + Horns, Original Fake, Mark Mcnairy (a couple pairs), and White Mountaineering.

Roden Gray - This was an extremely impressive shop, in terms of the space and the stock. Roden Gray is stocked with the best of a group of more high-fashion oriented labels. They had some nice shoes from Grenson, Alden, and Mark Mcnairy, cuts of denim from 3sixteen, and large collections of pieces from Givenchy, Robert Geller, Saturday’s, Thom Browne, Band of Outsiders, CDG, Moncler, Gitman Brothers Vintage, Junya Wantabe Man, Miansai, and Kitsune.

The Found & The Freed Pop-Up - This was an awesome find. A basement pop-up that appears three times a year in Vancouver, filled with the coolest vintage chairs, desks, filing cabinets, shelves, lamps and odds and ends. It was beautifully curated.

Old Faithful Shop - Filled with mostly “home” goods, this Americana-vibed shop had a nice collection from Makr Carry Goods and a few items from the Hill-Side.

Inventory Stockroom - You may or may not have heard of Inventory magazine, but if you haven’t you should definitely check it out. The magazine has a stockroom located in Gastown, and it’s home to some great pieces of clothing. Along with issues of Inventory, the white and open shop is stocked with threads from Beams Plus, Margaret Howell, Mark McNairy, Tricker’s, Vibram, Yuketen, Mt. Rainer Design, Batten Sportswear, and Woolrich Woolen Mills.

Neighbour (pictured above) - This shop was beautiful, and I found myself talking to the dudes who worked there for a while. The vibe at Neighbour was sort of like a refined streetwear, with notes of outdoor functionality and high fashion thrown in. Basically, it was a trendy blogger’s paradise. The store is stocked with great pieces form Sunspel, Mackintoch, Svensson, Unis, Patrick Ervell, Baron Wells, New Balance, Superga, Norse Projects, Il Busseto, Hyde, Uniform Wares, Smart Turnout, and Our Legacy.

Seattle’s menswear shops, from a visitor’s perspective:

I was just in Seattle, and it goes without being said that I couldn’t leave without doing some investigative work regarding the city’s menswear shops. Obviously, I could not hit every single shop in the city, but these are the ones that stood out from the shops that I was able to visit:

Butch Blum - The vibe at Butch Blum was a little more fashion-oriented than I am typically used to, or personally indulge in. There were, however, a nice selection of jackets from L.B.M. 1911 and six or seven pairs of Alden shoes in stock. Other notable brands stocked were J Brand, Z Zegna, and Luciano Barbera (MTM).

Kuhlman -  It seems to be that Kuhlman is the place to go for dude who likes a jacket with a bit skinnier lapel. It’s located in a small space at the base of the Ace Hotel on beautiful 1st Ave. I didn’t get too much information, seeing as the tailor was busy with a client, but Kuhlman also offers bespoke shirting and suiting. Other notable brands stocked at the shop are Barbour, Randolph Engineering, J. Lindeberg, Tellason, Nudie, Naked & Famous, Agave, Mosley Tribes, Pendleton Portland Collection, and Schott.

Peter Miller - This isn’t a menswear shop, but I felt inclined to throw it in here. Primarily a book store, focused on architecture and design, with a lot of great products that are ingeniously designed. Absolutely beautiful.

Ian - Ian has a similar vibe to that of Kuhlman, but with a little more of a workwear emphasis. Stocked with some great denim, including 3sixteen, as well as threads from Levi’s Made and Crafted and Woolrich.

Gilbert Footwear - Gilbert stocks a lot of things that could be described as “cowboy boots”, but if you are looking to snag a pair of Aldens, it is absolutely the place to go. There are at least twenty different pairs stocked, with a lot of in-store models exclusive to Gilbert.

Mario’s - When I say that Mario’s was the most impressive store that I went into in Seattle, that’s what I mean. Mario’s is the store that stocks all of the menswear porn. There are extensive collections of Isaia, Brunello Cucinelli, and Loro Piana. Incotex, Ermenegildo Zegna, 3x1 Denim, Brioni, Etro, Canali, Lanvin, Hartford, Kiton, Moncler, and tons of other younger brands are stocked as well. The stocklist is impressive, and the staff is extremely friendly and helpful. Mario’s hangs with the best shops on the East coast, and if you’re in Seattle, you should absolutely stop by.
