Just snagged these from Herring Shoes, hopefully it was a good cop.

I need a new pair of lace-ups, and I am in absolutely no kind of situation where I can drop a lot of money on basically anything. I was happy to find these suede wingtips from Herring (go ahead #menswear, lecture me/make your comments on quality and criticize me for not buying bespoke Edward Green or whatever - I’M JUST A DUDE GOING THROUGH FINANCIAL STUDENT STRUGGLES). Herring shoes are made by Loake, and this pair is fully leather-lined, goodyear welted, and cost me $150 (on sale) shipped. Anxiously awaiting their arrival.

Now mine: Hackett London 100% cotton button-up

I got my Hackett button-up in the mail today, and it is absolutely incredible.

The cotton fabric is perfect, featuring a subtle polka dot. You could call the fabric denim, but it’s so soft and light that I’m not going to. The cut-away collar is beautiful; it lays perfectly. The cuffs are a little different than my preferred cuff, but killer just the same. The construction is also exactly what you would expect from Mr. Hackett.

The details make this shirt though. The last button is stitched with a nice contrasting red thread, giving it a little life that only you know exists. The feature I was most excited by was the little slit shown below the two extra buttons. You know what that is? That slit holds your collar stays if you want to take them out of your collar, or just want to carry an extra pair. Yeah.

This shirt is absolutely luxe, in every sense of the word.

INSTACOPPED

100% Cotton Cut-away from Hackett

I’ve been looking for this exact shirt (at the right price) for the past month.

Price was more than on-point, the fit seems like it should be too, and the dots are perfectly subtle.

This is a no-tie shirt, but I’m very excited for this to arrive.

Aldous Huxtable: And now, a word from Killer.

(One of my best friends is a freak of nature. He got a perfect score on the GMAT, almost did it on the MCAT and is now an orthopedic surgeon at the Mayo Clinic. Dude gets more done in a week that I did in 2011 completely. He might also be the smartest person I know. He can also drink you under…

For real, though. His buddy is spot on.

Wisdom, or truth, or inspiration, or whatever you want to call it.

This is all of the above.

I’ve never bought a piece of clothing with the intention of wearing it once every three weeks.

I just think that it’s a very strange concept. I saw a picture of this guy’s closet last week, and he had at least thirty-five pairs of pants hanging in a row. It kind of startled me. I’m just now realizing that a lot of people have a lot of clothes, and that is, most of the time, a cause and result of wearing things infrequently. I don’t understand how a guy could buy a pair of pants and wear them only once every two or three weeks. Do you have that many pairs of pants? Am I missing something here? Is this a real life thing?

I’m a student, not even a grad student or a senior; I’m smack in the middle of my undergrad experience. Therefore, I don’t always have the most robust figures on my bank statements. During the school year, I’m broke as shit. I’m in an expensive major, and I have the unfortunately costly desire to drink beer that tastes a hell of a lot better than Keystone Ice (there is a point here, believe me).

That being said, a clothing purchase is an investment to me. I have to plan it out, weigh my options, and make the right choice. At times, this sucks. It does. However, I’ve just recently come to appreciate this more and more. When I buy a piece of clothing or a pair of shoes, I wear the shit out of it. I mean I really wear the shit out of it. My shit-kicking loafers have holes in both soles, and I had three crotch blowouts in the first week of Summer. My clothing fades, it frays, it changes shape, and I love it. I know that it’s mine.

There’s a difference between me and the dude rolling in his mountains of chinos. He has the liberty to wear a different pair of pants every day for a month. On the other hand, I might wear the same pair of pants three times in one week. I’m not saying having pants on pants would be terrible, but I feel as though I really own my clothes, while he just purchased them. I think clothing should be something that lives with you, not sits in a closet.

I’m not urging you to go and throw out any of your clothes (I will take them though if you decide to), but I just think that people should return on the investment they made a little more. Sure clothes are expensive, and sure they have to be taken care of. If you can’t wear the shit out of a blazer or a pair of pants though, what the hell’s point? If you have thirty-three blazers and fifteen white shirts, are you really that connected to any of them?

I don’t know. That’s just what’s been going through my mind lately.

So, yeah.
